Good news: the beginning of orthodontic treatment doesn’t mean the end of your days playing sports. Whether you are on your school’s football team or participate in extra-curricular activities, like gymnastics, swim, or cheer, braces won’t get in your way. Of course, it is important that you do your part to protect your braces and teeth throughout your time on the field or court so you don’t wide up with an orthodontic emergency. To learn how, keep reading!

How to Keep Your Braces (and Your Teeth!) Safe

The best way to protect your teeth and braces is by wearing a mouthguard. Although small, this orthodontic appliance can effectively cushion the force from a rogue ball or accidental elbow to your face. That’s why it’s so important to wear it during games and practice, especially if you participate in contact sports like football, hockey, and boxing.

Store-Bought vs. Custom Mouthguards: Which Is Right for You?

Your local sporting goods store should have one-size-fits-all mouthguards available. Unless you need one in a pinch, however, it’s best to use one from your orthodontist. Since they are custom-made, they will fit snugly against your teeth and braces, protecting them from impact.

What to Do If You Do Experience an Orthodontic Emergency

Orthodontic emergencies range from damaged brackets and broken wires to loose teeth. In short, anything that requires immediate attention from your orthodontist is an orthodontic emergency. If you find yourself in the middle of one, then take a deep breath and do your best not to panic.

The first step is to take a look at your teeth and gums, assessing the damage in the process. If you are having trouble swallowing, can’t control the bleeding, have fractured your jaw, or are experiencing another potentially life-threatening symptom, then call 911 or head to your nearest ER. Once you’ve received the medical attention you need, you should call your orthodontist to get your braces repaired. If your orthodontic emergency is more “routine,” like a broken bracket or loose wire, then call your orthodontist’s office right away so they can help.

Sports are a great way to meet friends, stay active, and learn how to work as a team. Fortunately, the start of your orthodontic treatment won’t get in the way of that. If you have a question about sports and braces, then don’t hesitate to talk to your orthodontist!
