What to Expect Throughout the Braces Removal Process

If you’ve reached the end of your orthodontic journey, you’re probably feeling pretty thrilled to unlock your new and improved smile! However, you might be wondering what the process for having the metal brackets and wires removed actually looks like. Here’s a closer look from your orthodontist at what goes into the process and what you can expect as you head into life post-braces!

What Goes into the Braces Removal Process?

Believe it or not, braces are designed to come off quite easily! Your orthodontist will use special instruments to locate the weak spots on your braces before gently popping them off from your teeth with relative ease. This removal is very quick and painless, though it’s normal to experience some pressure but nothing too severe. Once the wires and brackets have been removed, any remaining adhesive material is also buffed off.

Though the removal process is usually quick, your orthodontist cannot send you on your way until they’ve checked your teeth and taken care of a few more things:

  • Polishing your teeth until they look great!
  • Taking final measurements, photos and X-rays.
  • Designing your retainer and providing you with after-care instructions.

It’s not unheard of for patients to experience swollen gums once their braces are off, but this usually dissolves within a day or two. You might also experience some light bleeding when brushing, but this shouldn’t discourage you; brushing will help to reduce inflammation!

What’s Life After Braces Like?

Once your braces are off, in most cases you aren’t entirely out of the woods just yet! You’ll be given a retainer to prevent orthodontic relapse, which can occur after your braces have been removed. It’s important that you follow your provider’s instructions concerning this appliance. Be sure to never eat while wearing your retainer, and take measures to keep it, as well as the rest of your mouth, as sterile as possible.

After having your braces removed, your teeth will look and feel great— and knowing what to expect when the big day arrives will only ensure that things go smoothly, and you’re left feeling fantastic about your new smile.
