Thanks to advancements in the field of orthodontics, you no longer need metal brackets and dark-colored wires to achieve your smile goals! In fact, Invisalign’s clear aligners are not only incredibly discreet and effective, but the trays are custom-made for each patient, making them significantly more comfortable. With that being said, it is normal for patients to experience some discomfort in the days following the transition to each new set of trays. Fortunately, there are a few effective ways to minimize Invisalign soreness. Keep reading to learn what they are!

#1. Make Sure Your Aligner Is Seated Correctly

When your aligners are in the correct position, they’ll fit snugly against your teeth. If there is a gap between your trays and your teeth, then they’re most likely not in the right place. This can pull your teeth in the wrong direction, causing discomfort. So, make sure your aligners snap in place and are pushed in correctly each time you put them back in your mouth.

#2. Place a Cold Compress Against Your Cheeks

As mentioned above, many patients find Invisalign to be much more comfortable than traditional braces. However, it’s natural to still experience some discomfort – your teeth are being moved into an entirely new position! Luckily, something as easy as placing a cold compress or towel-wrapped ice-pack against the outside of your cheeks can help tremendously. (Drinking cold water and sucking on ice will also do the trick).

#3. Avoid Hard Foods

When your teeth are sore, the last thing you should do is eat foods that require extensive chewing power. Raw nuts, crunchy veggies, and tough bread are just a few products to steer clear of during the first few days after transitioning to your new trays. Instead, stick to softer alternatives, like creamy yogurt, certain fruits, and filling oatmeal.

#4. Start Your New Aligners Before Bed

Want to avoid some of the discomfort? Try switching to each new set of aligners right before bed! This will help you sleep through the peak hours of soreness. By morning, your teeth will be significantly less achy, allowing you to start your day on the right foot.

Invisalign soreness can be uncomfortable, but it’s a small price to pay for the straight, healthy, beautiful smile you’ve been dreaming of. So, don’t let it discourage you! Instead, keep the above tips in mind to have the pain-free, enjoyable experience you deserve.
