Traditional braces are one of the most tried-and-true orthodontic solutions around, and the metal brackets and wires have helped countless generations of patients achieve straighter and healthier smiles, and in turn, drastically improved self-esteem! That said, many patients experience mouth sores during their orthodontic journey as a result of their braces rubbing against their soft oral tissues. Here are some helpful tips from your trusted orthodontist for managing these sores, along with some ideas for preventing any future issues.

Tips for Managing Mouth Sores Caused by Braces

In most cases, the mouth sores caused by braces aren’t majorly severe; however, they can become infected if left to progressively worsen. Keep these tips in mind for managing your mouth sores and providing yourself with some much-needed relief:

Brush and Floss Regularly

A cleaner mouth is much less likely to encounter problems, including mouth sores! Be sure you’re brushing after every meal and flossing daily.

Rinse and Disinfect Often

You can also buy special rinses and gels to reduce the irritation caused by mouth sores. Saltwater rinses can also assist with this, as they have healing properties.

Use Dental/Orthodontic Wax

This wax prevents your brackets from coming into direct contact with your soft mouth tissue. It’s also water-resistant! You can also apply it over protruding wires that are poking your soft tissues.

Drink Plenty of Water

Saliva has antibacterial components that help prevent ulcers and mouth sores, so be sure you’re drinking plenty of water every day.

Take Over-the-Counter Pain Medication as Needed

Over-the-counter pain relievers like Ibuprofen can effectively relieve some of the throbbing pain caused by mouth sores. You might also consider buying a cream or gel designed for mouth ulcers, such as one containing benzocaine.

Consider Home Remedies Like Applying a Tea Bag

Tea contains antiseptic ingredients, making it a great option for reducing inflammation. A warm, soaked tea bag applied to mouth sores can work wonders!

Avoid Certain Foods

Sometimes, refraining from eating something is the easiest way to reduce discomfort—which can be difficult if you have to give up some of your favorites! But foods that have high acidity such as tomatoes, citrus fruits, coffee, and soda might irritate your sores. Bland foods that are easier to swallow are your best bet; yogurt, smoothies, milkshakes and more are all good options.

Manage Your Stress

Believe it or not, practicing stress reduction techniques can also relieve mouth sore-related pain. Some good ideas include taking a bath, reading a book, practicing yoga, meditating, or even going for a jog.

The bottom line is that while mouth sores are certainly a possibility during your orthodontic journey, there are also measures you can take to prevent them from popping up.
